Huge congratulations to the teams who did so well in tournaments at the Essex County Ground this week.

A team of u11 and u10s did really well in the Mini Matchplay tournament, with three wins in three games and all the boys contributing fully to the results.  You can see some photos here

Then, to round off the week, the u16s won their Trevor Bailey Matchplay final against Loughton, also at the County Ground – a historic first for the club. There are some photos here and here is the match report:

Saffron Walden U16 Essex MatchPlay 2014 Champions

Walden’s u16s achieved a first for the Club in not only reaching the 2014 final of the 40 over a side Trevor Bailey MatchPlay but also winning in style with a team performance against Loughton u16s at the Ford County Ground Chelmsford. They enjoyed tremendous support on the day from their parents, siblings, senior players and other members of the club and wore a commemorative training and playing kit provided by Mango Star and funded by sponsors Pellys and Veolia.

Walden won the toss and batted first. They lost Michael Turner with the score on 19 but a 50 run partnership between Jonny Brace (36) and Finn Karsten (22) kept the scoreboard moving before a mid-innings ‘wobble’ losing Brace, Hill and Karsten saw Walden reach only 81 for 4 off 20 overs. However, Ollie Barnes (50) batted beautifully in the second half of the innings, hitting two huge sixes and having useful partnerships with Callum Sparrow (19), Max Wightman (9) and Jack Ormsby (21), which saw Walden to a sound 192 for 9 off their allotted 40 overs.

Walden’s opening bowlers started well with Tom Middle (4.1.27.1) taking an early wicket courtesy of a brilliant diving catch by Finn Karsten and Captain Spencer Hill led by example at the other end bowling 3 consecutive maiden, taking the other early wicket to fall with Loughton struggling on 8 for 2. However Loughton’s captain Rishi Patel (39) staged a fightback before he was run out by a direct throw from Sparrow and then Walden turned the screw on Loughton. Tidy spells were bowled by Alexander Thomas (6.1.16.1), Jonny Brace (8.1.32.1), Finn Karsten (3.0.15.1) and Josh Preston (6.0.23.1), which kept the scoring rate in check and was supported by a catch in the deep by Middle and another run out from the arm of Karsten. Hill (8.3.23.2) returned to trap Umer Choudary (43) who threatened a recovery and another run out by Thomas finished Loughton’s innings on 149 and victory to Walden by 43 runs.
