Saffron Walden Cricket Club is a club that provides a pathway from participation for all ages and abilities through to high performance at East Anglian Premier League level. In 2014 it ran eight senior teams including a women’s team, a Sunday friendly XI and a midweek league team together with nineteen junior teams from under 9 through to under 16 and including two girls’ sides and our Crocus (disability) squad. Most junior age group field at least two sides in order to ensure that all young players have access to competitive cricket.

Altogether the club has 800+ players, friends and supporters. There are 360 playing members including just over 300 in the junior Academy. The club is inclusive and aims to provide an opportunity in which players can play at the highest level at which they are capable of playing and at which they continue to enjoy the game. We have 70+ members playing at representative level from district and county age groups through to Cambridgeshire and the MCC. We have two players representing England – one at over 60 level and one in the England Disability squad.

Strong relationships exist with both Essex County Cricket Club and the Cambridgeshire Minor Counties set up. The club attracts high quality players including former county and international players who complement the growing number of talented youngsters being produced by our Academy which was set up in 2005. The club has 15 Level 2 coaches and over 30 others with a coaching qualification. The Academy offers discrete 90 minute sessions weekly in the summer to each age group and a six hour programme in the winter. In addition there is an Elite Player Programme for our most talented youngsters.

The club is an ambitious club which has a strong amateur ethos. All coaching is voluntary. In addition, there are opportunities for coaches who are appropriately qualified to undertake one2one coaching, Chance to Shine coaching in local schools or additional squad coaching. Such coaches must be registered self-employed and take responsibility for their own tax affairs.

In order to continue to develop and ensure that all players realise their full potential and that all sides are in contention for honours, the club has decided to appoint a Club Coach. We see this role as being for someone looking to make an impact with their coaching and playing skills at all levels and who is prepared to do so as a member of an ambitious, amateur club.
