Cricketers in the U14s and U15s are eligible to join the Cricket Leaders programme if they would like to. The purpose of the programme is to give young people between the ages of 14 and 15 the opportunity to acquire new skills and develop leadership skills that will allow them to volunteer within their cricket club and/or school. This is open to all young players in these age groups – not just members of Saffron Walden Cricket Club.

The programme costs £40 and is made up of 5 training course modules – the majority are 3 hour sessions:

  • Activator Coaching (6 hours)
  • Umpiring
  • Scoring (online testing)
  • Grounds Keeping
  • First Aid

The club will arrange to run one of each module at the club house in the coming months (evenings or weekends).

Hopefully we can do them very early in the pre-season so they can use their skills volunteering!

If you can‘t make the arranged date at the club, you can contact our local coordinator to make up the module at another club. They do have to complete all modules.

The children also need to do a minimum of 20 hours of volunteering for the club, this can be:

  • Umpiring
  • Scoring
  • Pitch preparation and ground maintenance
  • Coaching (Sunday morning helpers always welcome!)

The last aspect is fundraising a minimum each of £50 for the club – this can be done individually but we can also help to organise one or two group opportunities. From experience, ice cream sales at the club on sunny weekend match days is the most popular and lucrative!

Those who complete the course go to Lord’s in the autumn, with the trip usually including a short tour for the children, to be presented with their certificates.

It’s a great opportunity as in addition to developing new skills, volunteering and learning new skills can both qualify for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and the programme can be used in a University Personal Statement and/or CV.

Please can you let us know if your child would like to participate as soon as possible so we can start to look at dates and book in with the trainers early! Email [email protected] to find out more or take this further.

We are looking to organise an Enthuse evening (online) registration event on Thursday 17th March.
